Last year I had the privilege of volunteering at the 5th annual Niagara Health Expo and truly valued and learned a lot from my experience.
As a second year Medical Sciences student and a member of the Med Plus program, this experience was truly a pinnacle aspect of my career development.
Through promoting and facilitating the various speaker sessions held at the event, I was able to learn from and network with a variety of medical professionals from the Niagara Region.
Niagara Health Expo
What I personally found particularly interesting was listening to the presentation given by Envision Eye Care because it is my goal to pursue a career in a ophthalmology and listening to this presentation provided me with valuable insight into the career.
Moreover, I also learned about the wide variety of medical services that are available within the Niagara Region including Thermography Clinic Niagara offering a new form of technology which uses thermography to screen for breast cancer.
Meeting Jennifer from Monarch Dentistry at the 2018 Niagara Health Expo, Larissa, centre, volunteers with Christina Carfagnini to assist and learn from the event exhibitors and speakers.
The Expo also featured the Regional Cancer Program. Visitors learned about their free, high-quality cancer screening programs for breast, cervical and colon cancer. In a speaker session, Riley Crotta, RCP Manager, explained that mammograms through the Ontario Breast Screening Program can find breast cancer when it’s small and easier to treat. The RCP booth at the Expo showed us how cervical and colon cancer screening programs can help to prevent these cancers before they develop.
In addition to the knowledge and skills gained through networking with the various exhibitors, it also provided me with the opportunity to give back to my local community and interact with people from the general public and inform them of the wide variety of medical services that are available to them.
Overall, volunteering at the Niagara Health Expo allowed me to support professionals in our region while assisting and providing information to visitors who attend and ultimately further my goal towards a career in healthcare.
